‘THE PEEP-’O-DAY BOY . A story of the Ninety Eight By Robert Buchanan
John Dicks First Edition (1902)
Undated, Copac records date this book to circa 1902, a very scarce novel by the Scottish Author Robert Buchanan, a paperback format published by John Dicks who were well known for their penny dreadful style publications.
The story is set during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, often referred to as “The Ninety Eight”. The “Peep-O-Day Boys” was the name of a Protestant agrarian secret society active in 18th-century Ireland (primarily in County Armagh). They were known for raiding Catholic homes at daybreak (“peep of day”) to search for weapons. They were the precursors to the Orange Order.
The book is a paperback format measuring 8.5 inches tall, 213 pages plus publishers catalogue at rear.
CONDITION The book appears to have been rebound with part of the original front cover laid down. Internally the cheap paper stock has browned throughout, else in good general condition.
A VERY SCARCE BOOK IN ANY CONDITION.’
