ALONE IN LONDON - THE PROGRAMME

Page 1:

Buchanan’s opening disclaimer about any perceived similarities between “Alone in London” and G. R. Sims’ “The Lights o’ London” seems rather odd. The latter play opened at the Princess’s Theatre in London on Saturday, 10th September 1881 and there is no evidence to support Buchanan’s claim that “Alone in London” had been “written and accepted by an English manager several years before” that date. Perhaps he was sensitive to a charge of plagiarism, and comparing the complete article from the Pall Mall Gazette and the version printed in the programme, the omissions support such sensitivity. In this regard, an item in The New York Times of 4th September, 1887 may be of interest.
