MISCELLANEA

Buchbighead

A Letter from Tennyson’s Brother

‘What I did on my holidays. A Trip to Oban and Kirkintilloch’

In September, 2013, I went to Oban to see if I could find Robert Buchanan’s ‘White House on the Hill’. I also visited the grave of David Gray at the Auld Aisle Cemetery in Kirkintilloch.

‘Like a Giant Refreshed’

Patience

‘Art in England’ by Israel Zangwill

An article by Israel Zangwill which takes as its starting point the first night of Buchanan’s play, “The Charlatan”. It appears in Without Prejudice, a collection of Zangwill’s pieces for The Pall Mall Gazette, published in 1896. The book is available on Project Gutenberg.

Socialism

A few thoughts about Robert Williams Buchanan’s family (particularly his grandfather, ‘Lawyer’ Williams) provoked by the sorry state of the world. Bella Ciao.

Edward Dowden - passing mentions of Buchanan

Four letters from the online collection of Victorian Letters at the Armstrong Browning Library of Baylor University, Waco, Texas - three from Edward Dowden to his future wife, Elizabeth Dickinson West and a fragment of one from Miss West to Mr. Dowden - which include passing mentions of Robert Buchanan. Also, a few similar extracts from Letters Of Edward Dowden and His Correspondents (London: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1914).

Random Cuttings

Stray items from newspapers and magazines which mention Buchanan in passing and which I haven’t been able to place elsewhere.

Buchananalia

A few of my favourite bits of Buchanan.
